Cody Block Review by Play to Learn Preschool
CODY Block Review
ICYMI – we were ecstatic to add CODY Block by Qubs Toys to our catalog this year. What’s not to love about eco-friendly wooden STEM materials with a fun, modern aesthetic? Cody Block is an innovative, engaging experience of pre-coding via a tangible programming language. What does this mean? Simple visual symbols make a first coding experience of planning, sequencing, and directionality accessible to children as young as 3 years old.
Our Cody Block set comes with Cody the car, 16 City Blocks (Cody’s commands), and a City Guide brimming with instructions & stories. Use the City Guide to inspire your play or create your own adventures with Cody! Cody Block hits the sweet spot of STEM. The materials offer enough guidance to scaffold anyone’s first pre-coding experience and are open-ended and expansive providing lots of opportunities for increasingly complex play and STEM thinking.

Introduce Early STEM Learning with Cody Block
How can we learn STEM with wooden toys? The only preparation needed for hours of pre-coding play is making sure that Cody is charged up! Place Cody and his house in your playspace, then set up the City Blocks to direct Cody along his path home. When the top of Cody is attached to his base, he will set off, following the directional sequence provided by the City Blocks. If placement isn’t quite right the first time, “debug” your code by moving the City Blocks to adjust Cody’s instructions.
Introduce STEM concepts and vocabulary as you play! Big words become accessible and relevant for children as they experience the concept of an algorithm (set of instructions) and sequence (specific order of tasks). Integrating the function blocks helps children experience this concept as a repeatable chunk of instructions. Build growth-mindset muscles and embrace debugging as expected part of the pre-coding process.
How does play with Cody Block encourage STEM thinking? Breaking up a large task into smaller pieces takes practice. As children identify the steps required to direct Cody to his house, they are building their ability to do just that. Identifying first, second, and subsequent steps builds logical thinking. Add some friends, and the process becomes collaborative. Children can work with peers to experience first-hand that there are many possible solutions!
Play to Learn Preschool Reviews Cody Block
We were eager to get Cody Block into a preschool classroom to see it in action. We partnered with Jamie at Play to Learn Preschool to see how her students would interact with Cody in the classroom. Jamie was kind enough to put together this video on her Instagram profile.
Furthermore, she had this to say about Cody Block.
